Free is Good

This has been a week of free.

Free IHOP short stack. Free sub from Quiznos @ http://www.millionsubs.com (register quick)
Also heard that Jack in the Box had 2 free tacos, but I didn’t want to chance what that would do to me.
Last week I ordered my free sample of the Starbucks Viva, instant coffee, that you had to order quick because they ran out so fast. The @starbucks partner on twitter said they estimated they gave away 4 free samples every second.
Free movie rental on Monday from Redbox, also got an e-mail for a free coupon rental from DVDxpress.

Free is a huge draw, especially if it’s already something established that people want.

I spent $4.30 for my wife and I total. We bought 4 pieces of bacon to split and I had a cup of coffee. Also add the tip in there. Brilliant marketing from IHOP. I would never have gone to IHOP other than to get a free short stack, and I think that’s about the only time I do, but when I do, I always buy something else.

Is there something you can do to draw some traffic or attention to what you do by offering it for free, for a limited time? I am sure lot’s of folks will continue to check out quiznos after they have their free sub because it’s good. I have heard folks say they have never been there. If the Starbucks Viva is any good I can guarantee I will have a few packs lying around for when I’m in a rush and want some coffee.

I have some things I will be giving away for free. Things people want… Not sure how I will do it. Don’t really care about the traffic, but it’s fun to give stuff away.

More things I think that should be free. Once or twice a year that I would never try otherwise.

Dry Cleaning- I have “Dry Clean Only” but I don’t do that. Give me a free shot at it and I’ll probably buy into it.
Oil Change- I would probably become a loyal customer to a company that gave a free oil change.
Bike Tuning- I have a mountain bike in desperate need. If someone would give a free one I would continue to do it.
Goodwill item- I imagine if goodwill offered something for free to show people what they have, they would get a lot of interest
(They get it all for free anyway, use it to bring in more business)

That’s all I can think of now… Anything for free that would be interest of you and might convince you to try out something you never have before?

#Orange09

So, as a former intern at Bigstuf and enjoying all the information brought by Reggie and the laughs that Lanny would always create, I’m excited to see the ideas and new things that come out of Orange Conference this year. So, here are the break-outs I’ll be checking out and why:

Breakout A: Orange-ology: The Teen Years- Part 1… Why? I work with students who I’m helping to lead people in worship and I could use having some more insight on students
Breakout B: OrangeOlogy: The Teen years- Part 2… Why? Same reasons as above 😀
Breakout C: INFLUENCE: Moblizing the Next Generation… Why? This is what I do and I want to know how to do it better. We have 26 students in various worship bands that lead worship for middle and high schoolers and have led worship for over 8,000 at our 15th year anniversary. I want them to be awesome at what they do!
Breakout D: MESSAGE: The Art of Producing a Sunday Experience… Why? Looking for ways to better connect our students during worship.

So there you go. I’m excited about meeting a lot of folks I have connected with in twitter in real life, and excited to see how God will bring the team I am a part of closer together.

Ustream.tv Pwns

So, kitten cam has gotten nearly 100,000 views in 5 weeks and has really messed with my head. Anywho, just yesterday ustream.tv was giving me some sort of crazy connection error and wouldn’t let me connect with any browser on any computer to stream. My first thought was it was our internet filter, SafeEyes, that was causing some issue and just blocking it randomly, but it seemed to be a widespread event with other ustream cams to be down as well.

So I sent out a tweet:
@3amjosh Something is wrong with @ustreamtv @ustreamtvsupport Won’t let me broadcast on any browser. Kitten cam viewers not happy! Help!

and within a minute or two I received this @ reply
@ustreamsupport: @3amjosh what happens when you try?, DM me your number and I can help troubleshoot

So I sent a DM with my number and within 1-2 minutes I was on with tech support for ustream.tv! No waiting while listening to horrible music, sent out a tweet, gave them my number and in minutes I was on the phone with an extremely helpful ustream support guy, who even has been a fan of kittens cam and wanted to get it back up and running A.S.A.P.

It was some sort of bug in the ustream.tv system that was messing up a lot of the streams but they fixed it within 20-30 minutes and all of the viewers were happy again.

It’s a new age of customer service. To be able to send out a cry for help and be helped out kindly and quickly is huge! Is your company online looking to see what folks are saying about you? It seems if your not, you might have some customers who when in distress might switch services. Get someone from your computer scanning twitter now!

Sushi Bar Solution

This video was made by a couple guys trying to figure out how to set up the cameras to get some footage of a sushi bar. They decided to take their hands out of the equation and let the camera go on it’s on journey.

This just makes me think how sometimes we search for ways to be creative and the most obvious solution is right in front of us. Maybe it’s not even about creativity but just about getting our job done. Either way, what if the solution is so simple, already made, and right in front of you. I love being creative and try to find new ways to do so everyday, but this video made me think of when I might have missed an opportunity to catch something really unique.

So what thing are you trying to figure out how to do best or just trying to get done? Pause, for just a bit, and see if the solution isn’t already right in front of you.

This video may mean something totally different to you, but to me that’s what I took from it. Curious to see if it brings up any other thoughts in other folks.

So for me, I’m obviously trying to do something I can’t figure out how to do, and maybe the solution is in front of me? Hopefully it’s a free easy way like this track running around a sushi bar, but I’m guessing it will cost me a few bones in the end.

I’m thinking about taking my camera and putting it on the track at Krispy Kreme….
